What to Wear for Your Newborn Photography Session (And What to Avoid)

Choosing what to wear for your newborn photography session can feel like one more thing to plan during an already tender season. The good news is that your wardrobe does not need to be complicated to look beautiful in your images.

With a few thoughtful choices, you can create a soft, timeless look that feels comfortable and lets your family connection take center stage. At Stephanie Stanyard Photography in Wellington, Somerset, the goal is always to keep things calm, natural, and easy.

Simple choices create the most timeless portraits.

Timeless newborn photography session styling advice from Stephanie Stanyard Photography in Wellington, Somerset.

1. Choose Soft, Neutral Colors

For newborn sessions, soft neutrals are often the most flattering and timeless choice. Cream, beige, muted gray, warm white, dusty blue, and gentle earth tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family.

If you prefer colour, choose something subdued and harmonious rather than bright or saturated.

2. Keep Patterns Minimal

Small, subtle textures can add depth, but bold patterns can quickly become distracting in newborn portraits. Solid colors, delicate knits, linen, and simple fabrics tend to work best.

When in doubt, choose quiet details over busy prints.

3. Dress for Comfort and Ease

Newborn sessions are calm and unhurried, so your outfit should support that feeling. Select pieces that fit well, allow you to sit comfortably, and make it easy to hold and soothe your baby.

If you feel relaxed in what you are wearing, it will show in your photographs.

4. Avoid Clothing That Competes for Attention

There are a few things best left out of newborn photos:

  • Large logos or graphics
  • Neon or overly bright colours
  • Heavy patterns or bold text
  • Distracting accessories

These elements can pull attention away from the quiet, emotional moments that matter most.

5. Think About Layers and Texture

Layers can add softness and interest without overwhelming the image. A cardigan, knit wrap, textured swaddle, or simple blanket can help create a cozy, elegant look.

Texture is especially lovely for newborn portraits because it adds dimension while still feeling gentle and refined.

6. Plan for the Whole Family

If older siblings or parents will be photographed, coordinate everyone with the same soft color palette. You do not need to match exactly. Instead, aim for a balanced combination of colors and textures that feels cohesive.

This helps the final gallery feel polished and connected.

7. Avoid Last-Minute Outfit Decisions

Try everything on ahead of time so you know it fits comfortably and feels right. This is especially helpful for new parents who may still be adjusting after birth.

A little preparation can make the session feel smoother and allow you to arrive with one less thing to worry about.

At Stephanie Stanyard Photography in Wellington, Somerset, every newborn session is approached with calm guidance and gentle care. The right clothing choices help create portraits that feel soft, natural, and beautifully timeless.

Newborn session wardrobe ideas designed to complement elegant family portraits in Somerset.

For your newborn baby, it’s best to keep your baby’s outfit simple and neutral. It's good to arrive with your baby dressed in a plain white vest and a white baby grow.

These soft, light tones photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby rather than their clothing.

During most of the session, I will photograph your baby in just their vest, gently wrapped in fabrics, or sometimes without clothing to capture those natural, timeless newborn details. Keeping outfits minimal allows for a clean, classic look and ensures nothing distracts from your baby’s tiny features.

There’s no need for socks, as they can leave marks on your baby’s skin and will be removed for the session anyway. Keeping things simple and comfortable helps your baby stay settled, which allows me to create those calm, sleepy images everyone loves.
